Halloween Hand Candles Recalled by Magic Creations NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 30, 1997 Release # 98-021 Company Phone Number: (412) 672-2300 CPSC Consumer Hotline: (800) 638-2772 CPSC Media Contact: Yolanda Fultz-Morris, (301) 504-7066 CPSC, Magic Creations Announce Recall of Halloween Hand Candles WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Magic Creations of McKeesport, Pa., is recalling about 30,300 hand-shaped, three wick Bleeding Hand candles. The Halloween hand-shaped wax candle generates high flames that could present a fire hazard. Magic Creations has received one report of excess flames resulting in second degree burns to the consumer's hands as the candle was moved. The Bleeding Hand wax candle is hand shaped with five fingers, three of which have individual wicks. The candle flames could reach 7 inches high as the candle melts down to the palm with the wicks of the three fingers burning together. The Bleeding Hand candle is skin-toned with a red colored base at the bottom of the hand's palm. The candle was packaged in plastic, with attached labels reading in part, "BLEEDING HAND CANDLE...DRIPS RED BLOOD." Specialty gift stores and small chain discount stores sold the candles nationwide from August 1997 through October 1997 for about $1. Consumers should stop using these candles immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a refund. For more information, consumers should call Magic Creations collect at (412) 672-2300. ###
